Rezin Hamel is a well respected, high ranking General as the story begins. Something happens that leaves him in disgrace forcing him to leave his people and seek answers. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Norma Jeanne -- A 5 Star Fantasy Thriller : Ridge: Day One is one of those wonderful books that grabs your interest right from the start and keeps it throughout the whole book. The imagery and setting are superb and the character development is excellent. The ideas behind this first science fiction book by author Shawn P. B. Robinson are new, fresh and exciting. This is a book that gives the words 'fantasy thriller' true meaning. Day One is the story of an honorable man in a country that places honor above all else. To lose your honor is to lose almost everything, even your name. To go from being Honored Patir Rezin Hamel, head of the Council of Ridge, and General, head of the army, to just Hamel is hard to bear. Though Hamel has lost everything, there are still two things he knows. One is the mantra that he repeats to himself several times a day. "I am not without family. I am not alone. I must continue. There is work to be done." The other is something Hamel has known for 10 years. People are supposed to reach their dusk and die at age 34. Hamel knows this because he is the oldest person in Ridge. He is 44. Ridge: Day One is an original story with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend it. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2021 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nathaniel Luscombe -- A twisty book with an ENDING : There are two things I love when reading the first book in a trilogy. The first thing is a good introduction to the world. One that doesn't include info-dumping, and doesn't slow down the plot. The second thing is an ending that makes you want book two immediately. This book has both of those. Shawn Robinson knows how to craft a story flawlessly. I will admit that the first 100 pages were a bit slow, but once I reached the end I had so much appreciation for them. It wasn't that they were slow, as much as it was that I didn't fully get what the main character was trying to do. But the ending clears it all up in a way that I have never seen done before. I am absolutely dying with anticipation for the next book in this series. Robinson is a fantasy writing force to be reckoned with. ( Reviewed in Canada on July 2, 2021 )
